Maryland Junction Today - Knobley Tunnel
On May 1 2004 I had the pleasure of touring what is left of Maryland Junction,
Ridgeley Yard and Knobmount Yard with my friends Gerald Altizer and Doug Yoder.
Knobley tunnel is still there, sound and as big as ever.
If you find the information here useful or enjoyable, please be sure to drop me
a note in my guestbook.

The bridge you have to cross before you cross the Potomac bridge. This view is
looking away from Knobley mountain in land that is between the Potomac and the
hike/bike trail this crosses over (likely a former RR roadbed)

Bridge across the Potomac into the east end of Knobley Tunnel

Drainage for the tunnel. There's a spring that causes water to flow on both
sides of the tracks. It has always been like that, fresh, drinkable spring
water on each side of the ballast, running down into the Potomac.

The wood retaining wall above the tunnel is supporting a road that goes up and
around the mountain. The tunnel portal itself is quite high, around 20 feet or
so at least.

Inside of the east portal.

Supports along the inside walls.

Looking east heading back out. Notice the water on each side of the roadbed.
