I2 Tender
The I2 tender is easy to rough out, but boy does it have a lot of rivets to
impress!
 |
As of January 28, 2003, I have the main body and some interior rivet detail on
the tender done.& Here is an early photo showing the slope sheet rivet
detail before I installed the side sheets. Putting the side sheets on
later was more of a mistake than a design decision. |
 |
This photo shows the tender with the front section mostly complete, and the
sides built up. I still need to sheath the entire tender in .010" styrene
embossed with rivets. Also, in this photo, the interior side slope sheets - I
have no idea what they're called, honestly :-) - are not yet installed. |
After creating an initial version of the tender bottom, by guessing from the
plans and looking at other tenders, I ran across this in a reprint of the 1941
Locomotive Cyclopedia I just picked up from Peach Creek Shops in Laurel,
MD. The cast frame is quite a bit different from what I originally
had, so I scrapped my simple version and started over. Here's the photo
of the commonwealth cast steel tender underframe from the 1971 Kalmbach reprint
of the 1941 Locomotive Cyclopedia.

As of August 9, 2004, I had taken a different approach for locomotive
construction. I am converting my Sherline mill to a CNC mill. That will enable
me to create the profiles in 3ds Max (which I have) or Rhino (which I may get)
and then machine them in Freeman machinable wax for casting or directly into
brass for items like frames. More updates to follow.
