I2 Frame

In February 2003, I bought a Sherline lathe and mill setup.  The I2 locomotive frame is my first milling project.  Here is a photo of the frame sides, almost complete, with what's left of the layout dye flecked on the surface.  Since this was my first project, I unclamped and reclamped much more than was likely necessary.  Each time I did that, bits of the blue layout dye would flake off.  Note that the frame sides (tacked together with solder) have not yet been separated from the strip brass stock they were milled from (seen on both ends).

I still have a little bit of milling and filing to finish, but other than that, it is pretty much done.  I don't plan to open up the holes between the driver slots as they would weaken the frame and will be mostly hidden by the drivers and brakes anyway.

For reference, here's a shot below of the model plans for this frame. Please see the main I2

As of August 9, 2004, I had taken a different approach for locomotive construction. I am converting my Sherline mill to a CNC mill. That will enable me to create the profiles in 3ds Max (which I have) or Rhino (which I may get) and then machine them in Freeman machinable wax for casting or directly into brass for items like frames. More updates to follow.
