Western Maryland BL2 Locomotives

BL2 locomotives were basically an EMD F unit with the body changed to make it more practical as a road switcher (rear visibility was increased, and pilot and rear walkways were added, among other things)

The Western Maryland owned two BL2 locomotives.  They turned out to be a bit of a disappointment to the railway, especially in terms of their durability in a MU situation.

Both WM BL2 locomotives survive to this day.  BL2 #81 is at the B&O museum in Baltimore in (presumably) non-running condition.  BL2 #82 is in service in speed-lettering on the West Virginia Central tourist railroad

Prototype Photos

Here's a photo of the the real thing.  I took this photo at the B&O museum in Baltimore in 2002.  This shows the BL2 as it existed (physically) late in its career, only with the fireball rather than speed lettering.  The version I am modeling is the BL2 early in its career, circa 1952.

For information on my specific BL2 locomotives, choose from the menu to the left.

Here is a site with some nice BL2 information http://exotic.railfan.net/BL2.htm (unaffiliated site, opens in new window)
