irritatedVowel.com No-Nonsense Privacy Policy
Content Last Updated October 1, 2006
I'm a fairly private person. I have an unlisted phone number, don't give
out address information, don't post details about things to newsgroups, don't
put links to my email on this site etc. I ask that others respect my
privacy Because of that, I respect your privacy as well. Here's the
privacy policy, in plain english, for this site
www.irritatedVowel.com.
What I collect
Like all web sites, I record your IP address, the HTTP Referrer (what page, if
any, referred you to this site. if, for example, that site had a link to
this one), date and time information, pages and images requested, errors and
other site statistics.
In addition, through my guestbook I capture your name, optionally your email
address, optionally your web site name and URL and any comments you may have
for me.
I also use Google Analytics . Please refer to their
privacy policy for the information collected by their analytics
software. If you find something in there that is of concern, I may have missed
it, so please let me know by sending an email to: .
How I use it
First of all, no one else ever has access to the information I collect. It
is stored on my own computers in my own house. I do not give that
information out to anyone else, except for what you see in the public view of
the guestbook.
How I use your email address
If you provided me your email address, I typically use that to contact you to
thank your for signing my guestbook, and to comment on any questions or
comments you left for me.
When my site goes through significant redesign (once every year or two), I
usually email a site update newsletter out to people who have given me their
email address. If I do so, I will ensure that there is a very simple way
for you to opt-out of receiving any additional mailings from me. In addition, I
ensure that no other recipients of the newsletter can see your email address.
Please note that your email address never appears anywhere on my web site
or anyplace else where other people may view it.
How I use your IP Address
When I'm curious, I look at trends in my web server logs to see what people have
viewed. If you signed my guestbook, I can sometimes correlate the page
views with your guestbook entry and use that to better understand any questions
or comments you had. That is not always possible, and I don't always go through
that trouble.
If you violated policy on this site, for example by spamming my guestbook, I
will use your IP address to identify your ISP and report you to them. I always
go through the trouble of doing this.
Please note that your IP address never appears anywhere on my web site or
anyplace else where other people may view it.
How I use your Name, Web Site Name, Web Site URL and
Guestbook Comments
These are published on my guestbook page for all to see. Please note that
your email address and IP address never appear on my web site. If I find you
left your email address in your guestbook comments, I
will remove it as soon as I can. That will save you from some potential spam.
How I use your Referring URL
I use this in a couple ways. First of all, my web log analysis program
lets me see what pages most often refer people to my site. I use this to
discover what sites link to me, and how often people follow that link. I love
to see what sites link to me, and how people refer to the content of my site. I
typically do this a couple times a week.
Secondly, I use the Referring URL to ensure that images on my site are only
viewed through my site. If the referring URL is through another site, the
image will not be displayed. This prevents people from "deep linking" to
images on my site, and using my content and bandwidth for their own purposes.
Some people specifically block the Referring URL through browser settings, and
set it to be something else. Those people will not be able to view most
images on my site.
