Birding Information

The Brown Creeper is very difficult to photograph because it is small, fast, and very well camouflaged.  It winds its way up the tree, usually in a spiral. Unlike the nuthatch, however, it cannot walk back down, it has to fly down.  The Brown Creeper visits us just for the duration of winter.

General Information

  • Length: 5 1/4 inches
  • Wingspan 7 to 8 inches
  • Family: Certhidae

Identification (Male)

  • Slender decurved pointed bill
  • Buff-streaked brown upperparts
  • White line over eyes
  • Long rufous tail with stiff pointed tail feathers at end
  • White underparts
  • Sharp claws
  • Winds and coverts edged and tipped with buff and white

Identification (Female)

  • The female is similar to the male.

Identification and size information from Birds of North America Eastern Region by Fred J. Alsop III, 2001 DK Publishing. I highly recommend this book as there is a lot more information than I present here.
